Mon 3rd July, day Zero:

Today in Hyderabad from Steve Cubbins and Alex Wan
A Grand Opening

SRFI President N Ramachandran opened proceedings at the press launch of the Qatar Airways Challenge 2006, outlining what the event means to Indian squash. With him was Qatar Airways' Ali Al Rais, Major Maniam of the SRFI, WISPA's Andrew Shelley and the top two seeds for the event, Nicol David and Rachael Grinham.

"On behalf of the SRFI and all squash lovers in India I'd like to express our thanks to Qatar Airways for allowing us the privilege of bringing the world's best women players to India for the first time ever.

"The event ties in with our aim of producing a world champion through our own ICL academy, which we've  had great success with since its launch in 2000.

For this event we’re blooding our juniors and hoping they can all gain experience and progress through this exposure to top class
women’s squash.

The Secunderabad Club has gone out of its way to ensure the tournaments has a wonderful venue up until the quarters and I'm sure it will be a great success there.

"We wish the WISPA players a successful tournament and advise them to do some shopping while they're here!"

"Thanks to Qatar Airways, WISPA, the Secubderabad Club, the Taj Krishna, the players and the SRFI for making this happen.

"Let us enjoy glorious squash for the next six days."

"The world's leading players are here, right at your doorstep, for the next six days."

Reddy for the challenge

"We’re blooding all our young players in this event," said SRFI
President N Ramachandran in his opening remarks today.

India's trop three juniors, Surbhi Misra, Anwesha Reddy and Dipika Pallikal have indeed been 'thrown in at the deep end' for tomorrow's qualifying competition, but they're all realistic, raring to go and ready for the challenge of their first senior international event ...

"We’re really looking forward to this event, our first senior competition. It will be a great experience for us."

"Hopefully we can all do really well, and it means we will get to see all the world’s top players in action too."

"We’ve all been playing for four years and found out a month ago that we’d be playing in this event. We’re all really excited and hope to do well."

Also in the qualifying draw is India’s best-ever female player Joshna Chinappa. After two British Junior Open successes and runner-up spot in the world juniors Joshna is making the transition to the senior scene and has already played several WISPA events.

"I’ve trained hard for this event, I’ve just come back from two months in Amsterdam with Liz Irving and I played the WISPA Carcassonne and Tranzparanz events while I was over there. I’d like to think I’ve got a really good chance of qualifying for the main event.

"We don’t have many women players over here, and the juniors have a long way to go but with the right guidance and training they can make an impact and events like this can only help them to progress."
